York Theatre Royal’s Studio is about to transform into The Old Paint Shop, an intimate cabaret club that promises to bring warmth, laughter, and thrilling performances to the city this winter. Running from January 23 to February 8, this new season is bursting with an eclectic line-up, featuring comedy, music, burlesque, and more.
Named after the space’s former life as a workshop, The Old Paint Shop captures a rustic charm while delivering cutting-edge entertainment. With its cabaret-style seating and unreserved arrangements, audiences will enjoy a relaxed, immersive experience—perfect for grabbing a drink at the bar and soaking in the atmosphere.
Here’s what’s in store, and why we’re excited from The Front Row:

25 January – Hyde Family Jam Burns Night
Folk meets punk with York’s favourite band, Hyde Family Jam, in a Burns Night celebration. Two performances (one family-friendly at 2pm) guarantee a raucous evening of energetic covers and irreverent fun. We can’t wait to see how their unique sound turns traditional Burns Night on its head.

31 January – Karl Mullen
York’s beloved busking pianist, Karl Mullen, takes the stage for a dynamic show blending everything from Chopin to Oasis. Expect humour, storytelling, and music that spans the ages. The Front Row is eagerly awaiting Karl’s unique take on the classics.
01 February – Haus of Games with the Isolation Creations
The Isolation Creations channel old-school British drag in a raucous evening of games, comedy, and cheeky prizes. Think seaside landladies, cheeky barmaids, and a party atmosphere that’ll leave you laughing long after the night ends. This promises to be pure, unadulterated fun!
07 February – The Beverley Beirne Trio
